Julia Leeth set to stand for PC(USA) moderator

Julia Leeth, pastor of First Church in Lompoc, Calif., has announced her intention to stand for moderator, and the Presbytery of Santa Barbara called a special meeting for June 9 to vote on endorsing her.

If endorsed, she would be the sixth moderatorial candidate.

Leeth formerly served as associate pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Lakewood, Colo., and before that as associate pastor at Lakeside Community Presbyterian Church in Lakeside, Calif. She has earned a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary, and is a student in the doctoral program at Denver Seminary in Colorado.

In Santa Barbara Presbytery, Leeth serves as chair of the Committee on Ministry and a member of both the Permanent Judicial Committee and the Nominating Committee. In her community, she is a chaplain with the Lompoc Police Department.

In a letter describing her candidacy, Leeth wrote that friends and colleagues have been asking her for months to consider standing for moderator, and “I have been prayerfully considering it but decided to wait and watch for a later time.” But she felt “unrest in my soul,” so kept praying about it, and was encouraged to go forward when the session of her congregation voted unanimously that she should proceed.

Leeth also wrote that “my greatest prayer is that people’s lives will be radically and irrevocably be changed for Jesus Christ in Minneapolis,” when the General Assembly meets.
