Because the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. denomination is unfortunately losing member churches to other denominations, let us consider why denominations are established in the first place. Are they formed by the will of God or simply by the will of man? If it is by the will of God, why does God establish so many? Also if God is forming all these new ones what does God expect us to do with the old ones?
It is difficult to believe that God has created all these denominations. And it is not easy to discern God’s will operating in the splintering of the church. It is much easier to see the will of human beings active in the creation of new denominations.
However, some Christian leaders continue to form more denominations convinced that they are doing the will of God. And there are always other Christians who will join them for the same reason. This activity has been experienced for centuries. It is amazing to me how many denominations have been organized during my life time.
Shortly before his crucifixion Jesus prayed to the Father that Jesus’ followers would be one as he and the Father are one. How can any statement concerning the will of God be clearer than that? The problem with these new denominations is that again they will be separating Christians which is the opposite from what Jesus desired. Today we definitely need leaders who will bring Christians together for a joyful witness to our oneness in Christ and the church.
