Fellowship PC(USA), the group that in February called the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) “deathly ill” and plans a gathering in August to figure out next steps, has released some updated goals and is urging congregations and individuals to move “carefully and deliberately” in deciding how to proceed.
Wow, this one will put you through the wringer. Especially if you are a parent, and tried to raise a child, and realized full well that the “product” which emerges is its own person, over which you have painfully limited influence.
First, a disclaimer: this is a comic book hero that I loved as a kid. Maybe because he’s human, he has to use his imagination, and he’s part of a greater good. Plus, that requirement of having to recharge the ring every day gives rise to all manner of good analogies. (Fill in your own similes here.)
“Bad Teacher” is not worth your time. Now, the easy thing would be just to leave it at that. It’s a comedy and it isn’t funny. But the self-respecting critic buried deep within demands a fuller explanation. What makes “Bad Teacher” so bad?
As editor of a magazine that speaks to the whole church, I feel compelled to write to Presbyterian friends in particular groupings of conviction — while allowing others to eavesdrop. Last time I addressed those celebrating the adoption of Amendment 10-A. This time, I write to those grieving the amendment’s adoption. In the next edition, I will address those who stand somewhere in the middle.
For some evangelical Presbyterians, this is a season of asking, “What comes next?”

Ask any Protestant how the Roman Catholic Church is structured, and you will hear, “The pope rules the cardinals, the cardinals rule the bishops, the bishops rule the priests, and the priests rule the congregations.” Too simple, but mostly true. In most cases.

has approved grants totaling $ 150,430 to 9 self-help projects in the
United States.
LOUISVILLE (PNS) With violence flaring in Sudan as the July 9 independence
of South Sudan nears, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) leaders have called on all
Presbyterians to pray for peace in the East African country.
The cleric's comments follow faith groups' interaction with the agency on June 7 and
8 during a preparatory meeting in Nairobi for the 17th Conference of Parties (COP-
17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in
Durban, South Africa in November.

A former president of Columbia Theological Seminary, C. Benton Kline Jr., died on June 20 following a brief illness.
CANTERBURY, England (ENI) Leaders of the Church of England and
the Methodist Church have been urged to work more closely in the future in
order to strengthen Christian unity.
GENEVA (ENI) The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Council have approved plans
for three-way talks that will include Lutherans, Roman Catholics, and
Mennonites.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (PNS) The Rev. Adel Malek didn’t necessarily intend to
become a Presbyterian minister. An engineer by profession, he and his
wife moved from Egypt to the United States in the late 1980s. Malek
worked as an engineer until he retired last December.
